Nanjing, October 10, 2026 -- As autumn colors deepen in the Jiangnan region of China, the "Autumn Climb to Niushoushan: Verdant Greenery and Golden Splendor" 2026 Autumn Niushoushan event at the Nanjing Niushoushan kicked off on September 23rd, the Autumn Equinox, and will continue until November. With the arrival of October, a series of activities will unfold : cultural lectures, Dunhuang Culture Week, a photography competition, Double Ninth Festival mountain climbing, and Zen healing retreats will be held, offering domestic and international tourists a diverse autumn travel experience that blends nature, culture, and well-being.

Niushoushan, located in the southern suburbs of Nanjing, is named for its twin peaks that resemble a bull's head. It is one of Nanjing's representative cultural scenic spots. In autumn, the mountain forests are ablaze with color, and buildings such as the Buddha Palace and Buddha Pagoda complement the mountain scenery, making it a perfect place for leisurely strolls, photography, and cultural exploration.

Main experiences from October to November

Seeking Autumn in the Mountains and Forests and Climbing Heights on Double Ninth Festival

Starting October 11th, the "Seeking Autumn in Dongchan" immersive cultural theme activity will be launched. Visitors can explore historical sites along ancient mountain trails and participate in interactive activities. On October 18th, the Double Ninth Festival, Niushoushan will open a 3.6-kilometer hiking route, allowing visitors to climb the mountain and enjoy the autumn scenery of Nanjing.

The photography competition is open for submissions worldwide.

Niushoushan, in partnership with Visual China 500PX, has launched the "One Mountain, One World: Niushou in Light and Shadow" photography competition, adopting a "one theme, two venues, year-round operation" model to solicit submissions globally. Southeast Asian photographers, travel bloggers, and photography enthusiasts are all welcome to participate.

The Twelve Lectures of Niushou Continue

As an important brand of Nanjing's "City of Literature" urban cultural living room, the "Niushou Twelve Lectures" will continue this autumn. On October 20, renowned scholars of literature, history, and philosophy will gather to discuss philosophical reflections on life and emotions amidst the everyday world; on November 14, Xu Xiaoyue will enter the lecture hall to share how to find relaxation and ease in a fast-paced life.

This will be a rare opportunity for Southeast Asian tourists who love Eastern art and cultural heritage to exchange ideas.

Autumn healing experiences are gradually opening.

Niushoushan's new healing brand, "Autumn Colors of Tianque Mountain Heal the Soul," brings healing experiences to the autumn mountains and forests. Five senses healing experiences, including Baduanjin exercises, themed meditation, singing bowl sound therapy, incense appreciation, and handmade incense balls, will be launched gradually, suitable for tourists who wish to slow down and find peace of mind during their travels.

Zheng He's Maritime Silk Road project connects Nanjing with Southeast Asia.

The "Sailing Across the Seas: Mutual Learning Among Civilizations" Zheng He Maritime Silk Road Cultural Exchange Project, launched during the event, leverages Nanjing's strategy for applying for World Heritage status for the Maritime Silk Road and the unique cultural resources of the Zheng He Tomb at Niushoushan. It collaborates with organizations such as UNESCO and the Asian Heritage Management Institute to tell the story of Niushoushan and Zheng He's Maritime Silk Road to the world. Zheng He's seven voyages to the Western Seas have deep historical ties with many parts of Southeast Asia, and this project also provides a new entry point for Southeast Asian tourists to understand Nanjing's history of exchange with the region.

In addition, Niushoushan also launched the "Guanyan OPC Digital Innovation Platform" and the "Symbiosis of All Things" Niushou Green Public Welfare Program. The former provides individuals, small and micro teams, and cultural institutions with low-threshold, asset-light, and sustainable digital management tools; the latter, in conjunction with Meituan, Nanjing Forestry University, the National Innovation Alliance for Digital Application and Ecological Design of Landscape Plants of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, and Deji Group, promotes scientific research, popular science, and public welfare to protect the mountain forest ecology.

Niushoushan is located in the southern suburbs of Nanjing, about a 30-40 minute drive from downtown Nanjing. Ceiling collapse at Daegu building injures 38

Thirty-eight people suffered minor injuries Saturday when part of a ceiling collapsed at a building in Daegu, fire authorities said. According to the Daegu Fire and Safety Headquarters and the Buk District Office, the incident occurred at 10:16 a.m. on the second floor of a four-story building in Gwaneum-dong, Buk District. At the time, a vendor was selling kitchenware and other goods to elderly customers when a section of the ceiling finish collapsed. All 66 people inside evacuated the building on their own following the collapse. A total of 38 people were reported to have sustained minor injuries, with nine of them transported to hospitals. None of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening. Firefighters were dispatched to conduct a search and implement safety measures at the scene. A thorough search following the evacuation revealed no additional casualties. Police also deployed officers around the site to manage traffic. Built in 1994, the four-story building previously housed a grocery store on the first floor, which had suspended operations in September. Authorities plan to in

[COVER STORY] After interviewing 42 death row inmates, researcher believes capital punishment should end

Every weekday before 1997, death row inmates in Korea braced themselves between 6 and 9 a.m. — the hours when executions could happen. If 9 a.m. passed uneventfully, they felt relief. Then they went to sleep wondering if the next morning would be their last. No one has been executed since Dec. 30, 1997, but 56 people remain on death row — 52 in Ministry of Justice correctional facilities and four in military prisons. Kim Dae-keun, a research fellow at the Korean Institute of Criminology and Justice, interviewed 42 of them. "Most of them were ashamed, distressed or regretful about what they did," Kim said in an interview with The Korea Times. "I imagine they were brutal and frightening when they committed their crimes. But many I met in prison now were older, frail men." Oct. 10 marks World Day Against the Death Penalty, an annual international observance calling for the abolition of executions as judicial punishment. In Korea, the day arrives with the death penalty still on the books but widely regarded as unenforceable. Most inmates now believe executions will not resume — a beli

Human rights watchdog calls for progress on abolishing death penalty

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) on Saturday called for renewed efforts to abolish the death penalty, nearly 30 years after the country's last execution. In a statement marking the 24th World Day Against the Death Penalty, NHRCK Chairperson Ahn Chang-ho noted that Korea had not carried out an execution since Dec. 30, 1997. “The past 30 years have shown that society can maintain public safety and a stable criminal justice system without carrying out executions. This experience is a valuable asset that goes beyond simply suspending executions,” Ahn said. “Now is the time to advance discussions on whether the death penalty should remain in law, drawing on this experience.” Ahn also highlighted the global trend toward abolishing capital punishment. According to Amnesty International, 145 countries had abolished the death penalty in law or practice as of the end of last year, accounting for about three-quarters of countries worldwide. He said discussions on abolition should take into account the suffering of violent crime victims and their families, as well as publ
