"The Role of a Lifetime" - A Riveting Tale of Reinvention, Love, and the Unyielding Strength of Women

Feb 7, 2024

Wilmington, Delaware Feb 6, 2024 (Issuewire.com) - "The Role of a Lifetime," a contemporary, very American version of a my fair lady type of story, has recently been featured on America Tonight Radio with esteemed host Kate Delaney.  The author, James B. Flaherty, takes readers on an exhilarating journey of a young woman who reinvents herself, rises from obscurity, and against all odds, creates an extraordinary existence over-flowing with love and loss, which she navigates with the support of other women--and their friendships.

Bethel Sokoloff is a nobody from nowhere who constructs a path to a world beyond her wildest dreams. A contemporary prince is enchanted by her. His mother, not at all. Bethel worked very hard to inhabit the new skin she invented, to speak the new language, wear the right clothes. She will be enveloped in love, passion, and betrayal. And because she's a scam, she's easily scammed.  The powerful mother-in-law finds Bettina--that's the new Bethel--too practiced, too rehearsed.

Bettina is a dream creation--likeable, loveable, infuriating, and amazing. Besides untold wealth (and all it provides and demands) there are men who would give their lives for her. When her world comes crashing down around her, who will matter? Her new life is a roller-coaster of dazzle and disaster.

Author James Flaherty doesn't just titillate you with the traumas and triumphs of this remarkable young woman, he skillfully weaves a narrative that captures the essence of the human experience--at all levels--making it a compelling read for those who want more than a sensuous story of someone thrust into a spotlight of desire and degradation.  Flaherty admits to his envy of the brilliance and strength of women's friendships with women, and "The Role of A Lifetime" and this likeable story unexpectedly leans into this emotion.

This lively chat with the author is available on America Tonight Radio with Kate Delaney and is also available in podcast and YouTube formats.  The author, James Flaherty, added, "You will be proud of "Bettina," at times dismayed, but never bored. Look into her lives, loves and louses, and try to walk in her shoes. Could you play that role? And of course, like all of us--aren't you playing a role?"  Come play a part in "The Role of A Lifetime" with Kate Delaney.

Spirit of Hong Kong Awards: Blind musician with rare birth disease plays her heart out

A year after a seven-hour surgery in Hong Kong in 2025, Cassie Li Pui-ying was on stage at Queen Elizabeth Stadium, playing the drums before an audience of more than 2,500 people. She heard the applause but could not see who it came from. That March night was organised by Live Theatre, which her mother Marine Mak also helps run. Li sang, spoke and played the drums. The group gives visually impaired students a stage to perform on. Despite having been through several serious health scares, what...

Modi and Xi can’t bridge the India-China divide by themselves

Last month, President Xi Jinping travelled to New Delhi to attend the Brics summit – his first visit in seven years. On the summit’s sidelines, Xi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had an in-depth conversation that explored topics of shared interest between them, such as leveraging open-weight artificial intelligence (AI) for mutual benefit. Even so, such sanguine signals were soon drowned out by a spate of downbeat headlines. One recent story warned of the “asymmetric” relationship...

Lack of heat action plan leaves Hong Kong’s vulnerable residents at risk, experts warn

Environmentalists and academics have criticised the omission of a systemic heat-health action plan in Hong Kong’s first five-year plan and latest policy address, warning that relying on “common sense” is failing to protect vulnerable residents from rising temperatures. Their comments came as new research from the University of Hong Kong (HKU) found that extreme heat may have contributed to as many as 3,238 excess deaths in the city over the past decade. In response to the South China Morning...

New Taipei-Hong Kong subsea route opened to cut risk and meet AI demand

One of the world’s biggest network service providers has opened a new subsea route between Taipei and Hong Kong to strengthen the system against repeated underwater cable disruptions around the island. Britain-headquartered RETN said the new route would take its total to six serving Taiwan: four connecting Taipei and Hong Kong, and two linking Taipei and Tokyo. “Like many island economies, Taiwan’s international connectivity relies heavily on subsea cables, which creates exposure to risks such...
