Should You Put Prices on Your Website? 25 Pre-Hire Questions Answered

Oct 2, 2026

Profit Acuity urges contractors to publish real price ranges and cost factors online, citing survey data that most homeowners prefer upfront pricing while few HVAC contractors currently offer it.

Center Valley, United States, October 2, 2026 /NewsNetwork/ -- Profit Acuity advises contractors to publish a real price range for every service they sell, pulled directly from their own recent invoices, along with the factors that push a job to the top or bottom of that range. The company recommends against a single flat number for work that requires an on-site assessment, since no two roofs or HVAC systems are identical. The guidance centers on giving homeowners enough information to gauge whether a project fits their budget before they ever pick up the phone.

The full guide answers the question owners ask most, should I put prices on my website, with sample 2026 ranges such as $1,500 to $3,500 for an installed tank water heater.

This recommendation responds to a shift in how homeowners shop for contractors. A 2026 Roofing Contractor homeowner survey sponsored by Owens Corning found that 65% of homeowners said they are more likely to contact a roofer who offers upfront pricing or online estimates. An ACHR News and myCLEARopinion study found that 70% of homeowners are more likely to call an HVAC company that is open about pricing, while only 2% said transparency made them less likely to call, suggesting the worry that posted prices will scare off customers may be largely unfounded.

Despite that demand, most contractors have not caught up. The same ACHR study found only 31% of HVAC contractors list any pricing online, meaning seven in ten buyers want a number while seven in ten competitors withhold one. For contractors willing to publish, that gap represents an opening to stand apart from competitors who stay silent on cost.

Profit Acuity's guide lays out a structure for building a pricing page. It starts with a real low-to-high range drawn from the last 20 to 30 invoices for a given job, followed by the three or four factors that move a quote within that range, such as size, materials, or site conditions. Two example jobs near the low and high ends, paired with a list of what is included, round out the page. The guide's aim is to answer the homeowner's real question, whether a project is closer to a $900 fix or a $9,000 one, without pretending to replace an actual quote.

Pricing is only the first of roughly 25 questions homeowners research before hiring a contractor, covering cost, necessity, timing, and trust, according to the company's guide. Profit Acuity advises dedicating a separate page to each question so that customers and AI-driven search tools can find direct, specific answers rather than generic marketing copy.

Contractors who publish transparent pricing can shorten their sales cycle, filter out mismatched leads before the first call, and build trust with buyers earlier in their research. Publishing real numbers can position a contractor ahead of competitors who leave pricing off their website entirely. Profit Acuity continues to recommend this practical step so contractors show up clearly for buyers researching online before they ever reach out.
