After dental school, Dr. Wakefield continued her dental education and attended Howard University in Washington, D.C. She was elected chief resident in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and received her Specialty Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry in 2002.

From 2002-2004, she served as an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at SIU-SDM. In 2011, she was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award from Howard University for her commitment to community service and the profession. She also received the Excellence in Healthcare Award in 2013 by the St. Louis American Newspaper.

Board-certified in pediatric dentistry, Dr. Wakefield holds the esteemed title of Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD). The ABPD is the certifying board for the specialty of Pediatric Dentistry.

Among her professional dental affiliations, Dr. Wakefield is an active member of the American Dental Association, the Missouri Dental Association, and the Greater St. Louis Dental Society.

Further exemplifying her commitment to the field, she holds the title of Fellow in the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.

Pediatric dentistry is the branch of dentistry dealing with children from birth through adolescence. Pediatric dentists specialize in oral care for infants, toddlers, children, and teenagers. They are trained to handle the treatment of children under anesthesia and sedation, as well as the treatment of medically compromised children and adolescents.

In the course of her career, Dr. Wakefield has generously volunteered her dental expertise to provide essential care to children in various countries, including Nicaragua and Jamaica. Her commitment to global dental outreach was further exemplified during her roles as a Dental Delegate Ambassador with the People to People Organization, where she made impactful trips to China and India in both 2010 and 2013.

Leading a fulfilling personal life, Dr. Wakefield shares her happiness with her beloved husband, Denis, and their lively son. She is actively engaged in her local church community and participates in the activities of Jack and Jill of America, Inc.
