United Kingdom, October 10, 2026 -- New research from ABTA, the UK's main travel trade association, shows a growing share of British holidaymakers returning to travel professionals and package holidays in 2026, after a decade in which apps and price comparison sites were expected to replace the travel agent. Blue Lotus Vacations, a Slough-based travel agency, reports a similar shift among its own customers.
ABTA Research Shows a Shift in Booking Habits
In May 2026, ABTA surveyed 2,000 UK adults on how they plan to book their holidays. Nearly a third (31%) said they are now more likely to book with a travel professional than before the current conflict in the Middle East, citing knowledge (53%), expertise (44%) and the security of a package holiday (41%).
Package holidays are seeing the same shift. 27% of respondents said they are more likely to book a package than before. Their top reasons were having everything taken care of (52%), the right to a refund or replacement if the holiday cannot go ahead (48%) and value for money (38%), as reported by Travel Weekly.
This does not mean everyone is booking through an agent. ABTA's Holiday Habits 2025-26 report found that 34% of people had used a travel professional in the previous 12 months, down from 38% the year before. What has changed is how people feel when things are uncertain: the share who felt more confident after booking through an agent or operator rose from 36% to 41%.
Disruption, Border Changes and Tighter Budgets Drive the Trend
The most obvious driver is disruption. ABTA's June 2026 research found that 36% of people were concerned about the Middle East conflict and 26% were worried about jet fuel availability. 38% had put off booking altogether, most often while waiting to see what flights would cost.
Border rules have also changed. The EU's Entry/Exit System became fully operational on 10 April 2026, replacing passport stamps with fingerprints and facial scans for British travellers entering the Schengen area. The ETIAS travel authorisation, which was expected to follow, has been pushed back again.
Budgets are a factor too. ABTA found that 20% of people plan to spend less on holidays this year, up from 15%. Those spending less want to be sure their money is protected.
Later Bookings Increase the Importance of Financial Protection
People are also booking later. According to ABTA, 30% of UK adults planning a summer holiday intended to book just two to four weeks before departure, and 10% planned to leave it until the final fortnight. Booking late leaves little time to resolve problems.

Financial protection is the practical point. A package holiday that includes flights, bought from a UK company, should be ATOL protected, meaning travellers will not be left stranded or out of pocket if a travel company fails. When the flight is booked on one site, the hotel on another and the transfer through a third, each booking is covered (or not) separately, often without the traveller knowing which.
Blue Lotus Vacations Reports Changing Customer Priorities
Blue Lotus Vacations, a Slough-based travel agency that builds tailor-made holidays for UK travellers, says the questions customers ask have changed over the past year.
"People used to ring us mainly about price," said a spokesperson for Blue Lotus Vacations. "Price still matters, of course, this is Britain. But now the first question is usually 'what happens if my flight changes?', and the second is 'am I protected?' People don't want to spend their holiday on hold to an airline. They want one person to call."
The agency works with more than 50,000 hotels and over 100 airlines. Its holidays are financially protected under ATOL through its bonding partner Brightsun, and each customer deals with a named consultant rather than a contact form. Current examples range from a three-night Budapest winter break from £269 per person and a three-night Krakow city break from £299pp to a 17-night Vietnam, Cambodia and Bangkok holiday from £1,699pp and a 15-night, five-city Japan holiday from £2,679pp. Prices depend on dates and availability.
The spokesperson added: "For a two-night trip to Barcelona, a lot of people can book it themselves and be fine, and we'll happily say so. The real value of an agent is on the trips with more moving parts, like three countries, two internal flights and a ferry. When something changes on one leg, someone needs to fix all the others too."

Outlook for 2027
Online booking is not going away, and for many trips it is quick, cheap and effective. However, ABTA's figures suggest people are becoming more selective about when to hand a trip to a professional.
The duration of this trend will depend partly on events nobody can predict: fuel prices, geopolitics and how smoothly Europe's new border checks bed in over the winter. ETIAS is not expected before 2027.

Thirty-eight people suffered minor injuries Saturday when part of a ceiling collapsed at a building in Daegu, fire authorities said. According to the Daegu Fire and Safety Headquarters and the Buk District Office, the incident occurred at 10:16 a.m. on the second floor of a four-story building in Gwaneum-dong, Buk District. At the time, a vendor was selling kitchenware and other goods to elderly customers when a section of the ceiling finish collapsed. All 66 people inside evacuated the building on their own following the collapse. A total of 38 people were reported to have sustained minor injuries, with nine of them transported to hospitals. None of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening. Firefighters were dispatched to conduct a search and implement safety measures at the scene. A thorough search following the evacuation revealed no additional casualties. Police also deployed officers around the site to manage traffic. Built in 1994, the four-story building previously housed a grocery store on the first floor, which had suspended operations in September. Authorities plan to in
Every weekday before 1997, death row inmates in Korea braced themselves between 6 and 9 a.m. — the hours when executions could happen. If 9 a.m. passed uneventfully, they felt relief. Then they went to sleep wondering if the next morning would be their last. No one has been executed since Dec. 30, 1997, but 56 people remain on death row — 52 in Ministry of Justice correctional facilities and four in military prisons. Kim Dae-keun, a research fellow at the Korean Institute of Criminology and Justice, interviewed 42 of them. "Most of them were ashamed, distressed or regretful about what they did," Kim said in an interview with The Korea Times. "I imagine they were brutal and frightening when they committed their crimes. But many I met in prison now were older, frail men." Oct. 10 marks World Day Against the Death Penalty, an annual international observance calling for the abolition of executions as judicial punishment. In Korea, the day arrives with the death penalty still on the books but widely regarded as unenforceable. Most inmates now believe executions will not resume — a beli
The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) on Saturday called for renewed efforts to abolish the death penalty, nearly 30 years after the country's last execution. In a statement marking the 24th World Day Against the Death Penalty, NHRCK Chairperson Ahn Chang-ho noted that Korea had not carried out an execution since Dec. 30, 1997. “The past 30 years have shown that society can maintain public safety and a stable criminal justice system without carrying out executions. This experience is a valuable asset that goes beyond simply suspending executions,” Ahn said. “Now is the time to advance discussions on whether the death penalty should remain in law, drawing on this experience.” Ahn also highlighted the global trend toward abolishing capital punishment. According to Amnesty International, 145 countries had abolished the death penalty in law or practice as of the end of last year, accounting for about three-quarters of countries worldwide. He said discussions on abolition should take into account the suffering of violent crime victims and their families, as well as publ
Hong Kong police have arrested 127 people in a six-month undercover operation against a Vietnamese-led crime syndicate accused of running loan-sharking rackets charging interest rates of up to 3,700 per cent, as well as illegal gambling and unlicensed bars in West Kowloon. The syndicate is also alleged to have helped illegal immigrants find shelter and work, with police raiding eight premises on October 8 and 9. Among those arrested were 10 alleged core members, including the suspected leader, a...

The publicity department of the Zhejiang provincial party committee published the commentary on social media on Thursday, saying traffic could no longer be viewed simply as a data resource. Zhejiang’s capital city, Hangzhou, is...

Two Chinese ceramics at the British Museum have been damaged while on display and are being restored, sparking fresh debate over how museums should safely exhibit fragile cultural treasures. The museum, which said the incident occurred on October 4, noted...
