Sanford’s July heat reached triple digits, and forecasters say Lee County is heading into another run of mid- to upper-90s temperatures.

SANFORD, NC — Sanford homeowners are facing another stretch of demanding cooling weather after a summer that has already produced triple-digit heat locally.

The National Weather Service’s Raleigh office reported a preliminary high of 101°F in Sanford on July 4. That local reading came during a statewide heat wave that the North Carolina State Climate Office later described as part of an unusually warm July. Preliminary National Centers for Environmental Information data ranked July 2026 as North Carolina’s 10th-warmest July since 1895, according to the State Climate Office.

The heat has also had public-health consequences statewide. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services reported 1,808 heat-related emergency-department visits from May 1 through June 28, compared with an average of 1,363 visits during the same period from 2021 through 2025.

The immediate forecast keeps cooling systems in focus. As of Aug. 8, the National Weather Service forecast highs in the mid-90s for Lee County on Sunday and Monday, with heat-index values reaching 104°F to 105°F. The forecast called for upper-90s highs from Tuesday through Thursday.

For homeowners, sustained hot weather can bring cooling-system problems into sharper focus. Comfort First Heating & Cooling serves Sanford with air-conditioning repair, replacement and maintenance, along with heat-pump, furnace, ductwork and indoor-air-quality services. The company also provides plumbing and standby-generator services in the Sanford area.

“When outdoor temperatures stay this high for days at a time, homeowners should pay attention to changes in airflow, rooms that are no longer cooling evenly, unusual cycling, or an indoor temperature that keeps climbing,” said Adam Hagen, general manager of Comfort First Heating & Cooling. “Those warning signs are worth checking before the system stops cooling altogether.”

Residents preparing for the next hot stretch can:

  • Inspect the HVAC filter and replace it if it is dirty.
  • Keep supply and return-air registers unobstructed.
  • Clear weeds, leaves and other debris from around the outdoor unit.
  • Watch for weak airflow, unusual noises, frequent cycling or rising indoor temperatures.

Arrange professional service if the system is running continuously without maintaining the thermostat setting.

The U.S. Department of Energy advises homeowners to maintain clean filters and keep outdoor air-conditioning and heat-pump equipment clear of weeds and debris so air can circulate freely.
