Tobio’s Kits has released a guide to help beginners navigate supply selection for plein air watercolor painting, covering the essential materials needed to start painting outdoors.
Fort Lauderdale, United States, October 19, 2026 /PressCable/ -- Tobio’s Kits has published a new resource for beginner and hobbyist artists looking to start painting outdoors. The guide covers the core supplies needed for plein air watercolor painting, from palette and paper selection to brushes and portable water sources, with the aim of reducing the research burden that often discourages newcomers before their first session.

Plein air painting, the practice of working directly from life outdoors, has seen growing participation across the United States in recent years. Outdoor Painter notes the presence of numerous plein air societies, competitions, and festivals held annually across the country, reflecting the steady reach of the practice. Tobio’s Kits notes that this momentum continues to bring newcomers to the craft, many of whom are starting from scratch when it comes to choosing materials.
Tobio’s Kits founder Mel said the brand was created specifically to address the friction she experienced when picking up a new hobby.
“I’d spend hours researching what materials I needed, comparing brands, and visiting craft stores,” Mel said. “By the time I had everything, I’d spent a small fortune and felt overwhelmed before even picking up a brush.”
Painting on location adds a specific set of logistical demands, Mel said. Shifting light throughout the day, wind disturbing loose papers or brushes, and a limited window for capturing a scene all require supplies that are easy to carry and quick to set up.
The guide recommends that outdoor painters prioritize portable, beginner-friendly materials: a compact palette, 100% cotton cold-press paper, a small selection of round brushes, a water source, and paper towels. Tobio’s Kits notes that an all-in-one watercolor kit can simplify the setup process for those new to painting outside, reducing the number of individual purchasing decisions before a first session.
Tobio’s Kits offers a portable watercolor pack that includes a walnut wood palette, 12 paint tubes, a water brush, a cotton paper sketchbook, an absorbent wristband, a metal art clip, and a digital guide in a compact carrying case. The company says the kit is designed to open in seconds, so artists can focus on painting while the light holds rather than on managing equipment.
