Scott Selleck: The Advisor Who Tells Clients What Could Hurt Them

Oct 20, 2026

United States, October 20, 2026 -- Most real estate agents are trained to talk about what helps a sale. Scott Selleck has built his career on also telling clients what could hurt them.

Selleck leads The Selleck Group at KW City Views Realty in Fort Lee, New Jersey, advising buyers and sellers across Bergen and Hudson Counties. Licensed since 1993, he has closed more than 500 transactions. Today, much of his work centers on long-term New Jersey homeowners deciding what comes next, including those planning a move to South Florida.

His view of that work is captured in a line he returns to often: a listing is almost never a financial decision that happens to involve a house. It is a life decision that happens to involve money.

Selleck grew up in Leonia, a few miles from the Fort Lee office he works from today. As a boy he was a resource room student, dyslexic and inattentive at a time when schools rarely recognized either.

The turning point came in fifth grade, when a friend named Kevin Malloy told him he was smarter than he gave himself credit for. The next day, Selleck finished a test.

That moment set a pattern. Twice since then, the direction of his life has changed because someone asked him a question rather than handed him advice. It is the same approach he now brings to his clients: asking the right questions before offering answers.

Selleck learned what customer relationships really mean from his mother, Connie. Her retail stores in Fort Lee and Palisades Park ran for 33 years.

At Connie's Place, Saturdays became something more than a shopping day. She built a community of loyal customers and friends who looked out for one another. Watching that taught her son that business is built on people who trust a business enough to keep coming back, and to bring others with them.

After graduating from Rider College in 1989, Selleck earned his New Jersey real estate license in 1993. He started not in residential sales but in investment sales, first at Gerber/Somma Associates and then at Marcus and Millichap.

Between 1994 and 2001, he was the listing agent and disclosed dual agent on 19 apartment buildings totaling 357 units. That background in institutional multi-family sales still shapes how he analyzes value, pricing and timing for homeowners.

He earned his broker's license in 1998 and in 2002 opened his own firm, New Jersey Gold Coast Real Estate, in Jersey City.

The 2008 downturn brought significant financial challenges and the closing of both of Selleck's offices. He did not leave the business. He rebuilt at RE/MAX Villa Realtors in Edgewater, where he was later inducted into the RE/MAX Hall of Fame.

Around 2014, the second of those life-changing questions arrived. A younger agent he was mentoring asked whether this was all he wanted. Selleck had no answer, and he realized that was the answer.

In 2015 he moved to Keller Williams from a position of strength, as a founding investor in the KW City Views Realty office in Fort Lee. That same year he founded The Selleck Group, and he has since served several terms on the office's Agent Leadership Council.

Selleck's approach is consultative. Before a client makes a decision, he lays out the pros and cons of each path, including the risks many agents leave unspoken.

The people who come to him are often unsure what their equity really is, when to sell, what to fix and what to leave alone. He replaces that guesswork with current local sales data, an honest read on timing and a clear plan.

He also pays attention to the local details that get lost in the shuffle. A corner lot and an interior lot on the same street, for example, should be priced and marketed differently. Since 2001, his closed sales have been concentrated in ten towns: Fort Lee, Leonia, Jersey City, Edgewater, West New York, North Bergen, Hoboken, Cliffside Park, Weehawken and Guttenberg. That concentration gives him a block-by-block understanding of the market his clients live in.

Many of Selleck's clients have owned their homes for decades and are weighing a move to South Florida. For them, he created a structured NJ to FL Transition Plan that covers both sides of the move: selling in New Jersey and settling in Florida.

He is licensed in both states and works with Keller Williams Boca Raton Realty for clients relocating south. As a Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES), he understands the financial and personal questions that come with leaving a long-time family home, so clients can decide on their own terms rather than on someone else's timeline.

Selleck's work has earned the NJ REALTORS Circle of Excellence Sales Award at the Platinum level in 2021 and 2022, and at the Gold level in 2015, 2017, 2019, 2024 and 2025. In 2024, NJMLS recognized him for 25 years of excellence. He holds the SRES and e-PRO designations, and in 2025 he completed the Certified AI Real Estate Agent program at the Krem Institute of Artificial Intelligence, a private training program.

Yet the figure he values most is not an award. Between 75 and 85 percent of his business comes from referrals and past clients. To him, that means families trusted him enough to send him the people they care about, a modern version of the Saturday community his mother built at Connie's Place.

It is also the clearest expression of his tagline: Building Relationships on the Foundations of Trust.

Since he earned his license in 1993, Selleck's purpose has not changed. Whether a family is selling the home they have owned for decades in Bergen or Hudson County or starting a new chapter in South Florida, he wants them to make that decision with clear information and an honest advisor beside them.

Scott Selleck is licensed in New Jersey as a Broker / Sales Associate, license number 9236275, with The Selleck Group at Keller Williams City Views Realty, 2200 Fletcher Avenue, Suite 502, Fort Lee, New Jersey 07024, and he can be reached at 201-970-3960, the office at 201-592-8900, or [email protected]. In Florida he is licensed as a Sales Associate, license number SL3588731, with Keller Williams Boca Raton Realty, 7280 West Palmetto Park Road, Suite 110, Boca Raton, Florida 33433. Keller Williams City Views Realty and Keller Williams Boca Raton Realty are each independently owned and operated.
