What Democrats would do about Gen Z’s housing crisis if they win Congress

Generation Z wants legislation that targets affordability and housing costs. Democrats think they can do it better than Republicans. About two-thirds of young adults struggle to cover housing costs. And recent housing numbers aren’t promising, either: Single-family housing starts and building permits, a measure of future construction, fell 4.56 percent and 4 percent in September,...

GOP pushes for oversight of Musk’s dominance of space

Republican lawmakers alarmed over Ukraine’s loss of access to Starshield, a critical battlefield tool, are pushing for more congressional oversight on what some view as Elon Musk’s “space monopoly,” fearing that Musk will have too much power over future national security operations. Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, on...

Tourism chiefs see a way forward in Peak lighting push

The Tourism Commission and the Tourism Board will submit a revised proposal for a lighting project on the Peak to the Central and Western District Council next month for consultation. This was announced in a social media post by the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau after the tourism commissioner and lawmakers made an on-site inspection, as the government moves to address public concerns over the installation. Tourism Commissioner Ann Chan, together with representatives from the Tourism Board, toured the sites on Lugard Road and Harlech Road with Legislative Council and District Council members on Friday. The tourism officials briefed lawmakers on the project's concept and design, and explained how it had already been adjusted in response to feedback from residents, according to the post. The officials expressed appreciation for the councillors' suggestions, which included removing ground-level lights that encroach on public seating areas, reducing the number of light fixtures at certain locations, and adjusting the lights' positioning and method of suspension. "We highly value the opinions of councillors and residents. In the coming days, we will continue to conduct on-site visits with various councillors to gather feedback, while comprehensively reviewing the overall arrangements of the project," they said. They also vowed to implement immediate improvements where possible to allay concerns. Edited by Aaron Tam

Japan’s university defence bids surge as post-war taboo fades amid China concerns

Japanese universities and other educational institutions more than doubled their applications for defence ministry research funding this year to a record 291, up from 123 last year, as Tokyo moves to strengthen its defences. The increase is the clearest sign yet that academia’s decades-long resistance to military-linked work is easing. The bids accounted for more than half the record 560 applications received by the ministry this year, up from 340 last year, with the rest coming from public...
